30 less crappies

30 less crappies
Had a call from chris last thursday .His brother Phil was up here this winter helping Buddy Hillmen on the ice and he wanted to know if I had a cabin for saturday night. i said sure thing. I tried calling him saturday to see how they were doing but got know anwser. They pulled in here around 6 pm and were pumped as they had just cleaned 20 crappies plus they kept 6 that were over 15 to get mounted. Kinda sad to see them take so many but they drove a long way I guess and the limit is ten a piece . Chris kinda dissppeared when the crappie fishing slowed down as far as coming up here. He did become good friends with the greek and Ole and goes to alaska every year for 10 days in June
I remember the first time I met him we were on the lake about 1 am when this truck with a trailor was fllying towards the shore and a ice heave. I said watch this guy is going to hit that ice heave close to shore. We saw his headlights go skyword and had a good laugh. Little did I know at the time it was chris. He rolled in to our cabin at 8 the next morning. It took him 7 hours to get here from when we saw him go over that ice heave less then 1 mile from here with half his gear missing and half the trailor missing. We followed the debrie field he left and gathered some of his gear as he worked on that trailor of his dads all day here in the driveway. I think he has toned it down since those days.
He did leave us a meal of crappies that we had for dinner tonight at the westwind and just as I expected with the beautiful calm day the walleye were snapping from what I heard at westwind . If you were in 7 feet of water with a jig, spinner or bobber fishing you were catching fish. People look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them I love fishing on these types of days but here on red I have had some of my best fishing when the lake is like glass. I knew we should of went fishing when I got home from the farm but the girls did not get home untell 7. Oh well there will be other days

one week into the season

The fishing has been outstanding . The weather was a little on the damp side this weeekend but it did not stop the fishermen from catching a few. Frank and his crew camping down at the lake had a massive fish fry yesterday with fresh boiled walleye yes boiled walleye with 15 guys down there they have it dialed in on how to feed such a big group. I dropped the ball last night as I’m sure they had a nother fish fry with onion rings, frys and walleye. I guess the age is catching up to me as I fell asleep. I had no one in the cabin ? I guess its going to be one of those years. The guys camping on the river also did well. Tyler put the smack down on some elusive yet still catchable crappies with a group from Kansas. They kept 30 crappies. I plan on hitting that same spot this week and see if I can not get a couple of good pics. If we get into them I plan on keeping 1 or two for supper. Next weekend were busy then I have no fishermen booked the rest of the year ouch

Great fishing

had Jim, Sten and Dustin up yesterday. We started off drifting jigs and proceeded to catch fish all day long. The strange part as it was 3 out of 5 were keepers. We came into westwinds harbor around 1 and had fresh walleye for lunch. The guys came back to the cabin and took a nap for a couple of hours. We then headed back out and came home with 8 more. There headed home this morning with there 4 a piece plus the four I donoted for lunch yesterday. Could not of asked for a better day and got me out of driving the tractor at the farm for the day.

Another opener in the books

The season is under way with great fishing by all that fished upper red lake. Some had trouble finding fish under 18 but all and all it was good fishing. The wind has been strange and been out of the north and east the past 4 out of 5 days.
I had the pleasure of taking my brother warren and his buddy Doug fishing. We had a grand time and as one of the old timers up here Dave told me a few years back THIS IS A GRAND LAKE A GRAND LAKE and it owes me nothing.
All the guys here went home with there limits and there were even a couple bonus crappies to boat. I did see Cole and Jeramy saturday morning .They had been up for a few days before opener and got there 20 crappies. They come up every year and fish extreamly hard for them in any weather conditions.
I have my first guide job of the season so better get ready

Dissapointing

Well the walleye season is now over.
I had all the houses on fresh spots in what was a fishy area. The fishing was slow.Of course the weather was cold so fishing in the open was not happening. Everyone still had a good time but I sure was dissapointed with the fishing this year.We found some great areas that were very fishy and they would fizzle out in no time. Very frustrating. If I had it my way all the houses would get limits. I guess thats kinda silly but with a lake full of walleyes you would think they would be a little easier to catch. The season started off with no night bite at all which kinda sucks when your renting sleepers but that was out of my controll. The main roads only went out less then 3 miles and at three miles it seemed to be fishless.Once we were able to get out further we found some good fishing but again within a week it fizzeled out.
I would like to thank all the dedicated customers that came again this year. And also a big thank you to my new customers. I hope to see you again next year.
Today will be a sad day as I start the process of pulling the houses off the lake. I truly love being on the lake everyday and the work is very rewarding . Battling mother nature is the hardest part, finding great fishing can be tough, Keeping the equippment going is always a challenge. My helper had to leave mid jan. Which made things even tougher but I some how managed.
Now it willl be a long wait until we get out on the open water,I will be doing a little fishing looking for the elusive upper red lake crappie. We also need to do some work on the cabins .Lots of painting and cleaning as we get ready for the opener.
Again a big thank you to all my fishermen and lets hope the open water season brings with it outstanding fishing

11 days left

I only had carl and his son fishing last night and the night before .carl had 6 keepers and one to big that I returned to the water. 5 were caught after dark so that was nice to see. not sure what happened to the day bite but with sleepers its nice to here the rattle wheels.
I have taken 4 of our sleepers out but not sure about taking Idaho as its such a heavy house. It will be on the back of my mind and we will have to see if theres any action where it is. Were prettty busy these last two weeks and I expect mother nature to show her ugly side before the seasonn ends as it was 55 here yesterday

the push to the end os the season

sarha and jr went home with 4 keepers and I had a little time to visit and play a game of canaska with them. Sarha won. jermey and his crew left before I could see them but Brian found a couple of fellet fish in the snow bank and it must of been them.’
This past weekend Todd,Bob.Jenny and Barb fished florida. They went home with 7 keepers that I know of as they were gone when I got out there sunday. Calfrnia had Scotts kids on saturday and Scott and Wendy landed quite a few fish and had 14 keepers with there grandson getting to land a few. the area Scotts house set completely flooded with the weight of his house and truck plus the snow I piled up when I plowed them there spot. Brian is up and just like normal the fishing sucks for his crew. We moved them yesterday and may be moving again as I troll for good fishing. Jim and Sten took home 4 and were here sunday night.
ryan and his crew are in montana and leave today there fishing went from good to horrible last night. I just do not get it. Its time to hit the lake as I hope to have every house on fresh fishing for the up and coming weekend

we need some fishermen

Yes its true. This weekend we only have one house out of 6 rented. Ouch I can not gaurentee you will catch limits but I can promis you will be comfortable and it willl be like fishing in your livivng room. yesterday jeramy and his crew landed a 33 inch pike and had one keeper walleye when I checked in on them. I will be moving the house for them around noon today. larry and sarha are in florida and we will see how they did shortly. Other then that its very quiet here on upper red lake

only 4 weekends left

Yes its true after this weekend there will only be three weekends left. I spent the week moving all the houses into new areas, We had no choice but to pull out of the area that big pike kept messing with us. Somone needs to go over there with tip ups and see if they can land that bad boy.
Its been another slow year for fishermen.I have two house open this weekend and 5 next weekend the 11th 12th. The fishing could be better but thats always the case.
dan Jim and Loyde fished minnesota yesterday afteernoon and landed two. They were headed to lake of the wood and just fished for a few hours.
I’ll be doing a little fishing ths weekend as I host my fishermen. Old friend Bob and Ricj are bringing up a group of guys so it should be another fun weekend

banbino wins

I held I poker derby slash giveaway on ido and bambino guy won and will be coming up for a free stay on the 19th’
The fishing was not the best this weekend but we had some action. Kelliehad her mom amd step mom up. I made kellie in chrage of taking them fishing so I could concentrate on other chores. She did fantastic as they landed a couple of walleyes and lost a couple. sandy set the hook on a big Pike and Kellie grab the rod from her and the battle was on. they fought the fish for 20 minutes only to have it get off at the top of the hole. thats twice kellie has battled a monster only to lose it at the top of the hole.
Duey and Sue were here and I was able to spend a little time with them. Steve and Connie were there guest and I landed a fish on steves rod when he was not paying attention.
I also got to spend a little time with leroy and his boys. Shannon was on flying alaska as he works for the company that is being filmed.Shannon said if he could live any where in alaska it would be homer. thats where Ole lives in the summer and that where the greek hhas stated Natures ventures. I getting excited to go there . I still want to drive there in my 56 merc. lets hope with in the next 5 years we can make the trip.
jeff and Jacky were in montana. I did not get to spend is much time with them but they did go home with the most fish.
